With private offices, meeting rooms, mailboxes and of course open plan coworking across two sites, we’ve made it our mission to keep work off the kitchen table!
What was the idea behind the Workplace?
In 2016, The Workplace grew from the knowledge that start ups and small companies in Cheltenham had no flexible place to call home. In large cities, the likes of WeWork and Work.Life had arrived, whereas Cheltenham had similar demographics without good-quality provision.Who’s behind the Workplace?
Claire, an ex-teacher, had the original idea and still leads the company everyday. She’s normally found at Star lodge with Maya or Meg. Lisa (one of Claire’s neighbours) looks after Frogmore House!How did it start?
Like most businesses we started small…. very small. We had just 9 desks above The Find cafe in Regent Street to test the waters. This soon filled and we were lucky enough to be able to expand into Frogmore House opposite, with 30 desks.
We managed to transform empty store rooms into a bright and welcoming workspace for our members – as you can see below, it was quite a job…

What happened next?
Of course the pandemic wasn’t great, we closed for ten weeks, enjoyed the sunshine, but then bounced back. Before the end of the pandemic, Star Lodge in Montpellier became available for rent. It was love at first sight – Claire appreciates great architecture and that space has it all, with Regency splendour and a stunningly well designed new block in a leafy part of Montpellier a few moments from the shops and cafes.
Star Lodge opened its doors in November 2021… just before Boris told everyone to work from home again…
A few years on and both of our sites are buzzing with a wide range of members! From large multinational businesses, to individuals starting out on their own, we really do have people from all walks of life – and we love it.
